About

Hi there! My name is Peter, I’m British but moved to live and work in India at the age of 25. I now live in the city of Chennai, which is in South India and used to be called Madras before the anti-colonialism movement swept through the country and renamed all the British names to Indian ones (which is why Bombay is now Mumbai).

Like all good Internet Marketing cliches, I bummed and scraped my way through Uni and although I don’t know for certain (as I never went to pick up my final results), I’m pretty confident that I can claim to be a university dropout – just like all those millionaires and entrepreneurs before me.

I developed my first website way back in the late 90’s before most people had heard of the Internet. I went to one of those technology colleges and was one of the first schools to have access to the World Wide Web, so I guess my interest in this whole kaboodle was established then. By 1999 I had a website online, which I’m proud to say was entirely hand coded in HTML by yours truly. Once it was up, I wasted no time in monetizing it with PPC links which earned me my very first dollar.

Now, fast forward 2 or 3 years…

Instead of studying hard for my degree, I got myself embroiled in the world of Internet Marketing, somehow buzzwords like upsells, viral marketing and adsense were so much more interesting and profitable than computational fluid dynamics, airflow velocity and entropy theory that made up my depressingly boring Aerospace Engineering course.

I learned my Internet Marketing on the mean streets of the Internet and while my mates were learning thermodynamics, I was up to my eyeballs in HTML and CSS.

I first started making some significant money by selling some banking type software to a very specific niche. Although it was only a few hundred dollars a week, it was enough to fuel my boozy student lifestyle, but more importantly, it got me hooked on the concept of making a full time living from the Internet.

In 2005 I met my future business partner and mentor. He approached me because he was appalled that I was giving away an ebook for free. Over the course of the year we redeveloped the product in to a membership site and charged $97 a pop. Some extremely lucrative JV’s later and we were on the gravy train raking in more cash than we knew what to do with.

Unfortunately, we soon found out what to do with the money and put it all in to an online mega portal website which, without going in to too many details was an outsourcing disaster of epic proportions – essentially losing our entire investment. But still, through adversity you learn from your mistakes and grow from there.

Leaving the Internet Marketing area alone for a while, I slowly built up a network of over 150 websites (this was back before Wordpress was really popular and they were all static websites) and started earning my income from AdSense, which was awesome because it was the best hands free money I’ve ever made. However, income started to drop from the network and the killer blow was when my domain registrar, RegisterFly went bust and took all my domains with it (do the math on that, 150x$8).

Back to square one :)

I bummed around, doing some odd jobs and freelancing for people, but by late 2007 I realized I was going no where fast and with creditors banging on my door (hey, I told you I’m an Internet Marketing cliche!) I decided it was time for a drastic career change. To India to be exact.

Back in 2006 I traveled to India for 3 months and although I wouldn’t say I fell in love with the country, I certainly loved the food, the people and the weather (British remember, we count 20 C as a heatwave) and with no commitments at home (other than the debtors!) I upped sticks and relocated to Chennai.

Phew. Quite a rollercoaster story, but let me tell you where we’re up to.

Since the cost of living is about 1/3rd of what it is in America and Europe and I’m still able to have a very good standard of living, I encourage anyone who has no ties at home and is earning an income from the Internet to consider moving abroad to a cheaper place to live.

Anyway, my new job is Online Marketing Manager, which means I draw on all my past experience to develop strategies to promote the products and services of my company. Now, at the (young?) age of 26 I head up a team of 15 people (some of whom are older than me) and have command over designers, SEO analysts, content writers and developers. For anyone interested in Internet Marketing, it’s as close as you can get to a dream job, doing what you love and having virtually unlimited resources to do it. When you go to the outsourcing boards like Scriptlance, I just have to ask a developer or designer to come to my room. Need some data mining done? For me it’s just a instant message buzz away. I love it :D

However, now that I’m settled again, both financially and in my life, my first love of individual Internet Marketing has come back. Although I aim to keep this as a side income and to not let it interfere with my job (which comes first), I’m also keen to build it up to create a life altering second income. If I can use it to buy a house, a car, trips back to England or to other countries, then it will meet my goals.

But what is my overall dream?

To be financially independent and work only because I want to and am motivated to, not out of necessity. I don’t want money to hold me back in anything that I want to do. Ever.

So that’s me. Peter Claridge, Internet Marketing cliche, borderline fantasist. I hope you enjoy my blog and my websites.

If you want to get personal and find out about the guy behind this business, head on over to my personal blog, remember, it’s all about ME. http://peterclaridge.me
